Baby Noir, yes BABY NOIR. If you don't think it is possible you are wrong. If you believe it is possible but don't think it would work or be funny, you are right back in the wrong category. Little Trouble in Tall Tree, had me laughing and reading passages out loud to my family. This is one of those unique books that you don't see coming but when it hits you it is like baby throwing up a rancid belly full of curdled milk on your best shirt (in the best possible way). The author did what we all do; he wondered what was really going on in his infant sons head. He gave him a nickname based on his cheeks and the baby mafia was born! The first thing that grabbed me about this story was the way that the author integrated real life baby activities into the narration. I equate it to the times when Stewie Griffin from Family Guy actually acts like a baby. Every action that the narrator performs is spot on and the baby logic actually makes sense. Top this amazing story off with great art and you have a winner.
This is one of those concepts and stories that don't come along often; it is a breath of fresh air even if that fresh air is tinged with sour milk and poopy diaper smell. If you have children this book will give you flashbacks that will leave you wanting a pacifier. If you are planning on having children, this book will make you change you mind or at the very least give you an insight into what your infant is actually thinking. I have always been a firm believer that infants know the cure to cancer, in the process of learning to talk they purge such vital information from their minds, this book kind of makes me think my theory isn't as far off as my wife says it is.
This is a quick read (one decent trip to the toilet or car ride over to the next town to watch your kids basketball game) but by no means little. The concept of baby noir alone should be a draw, but combine that with clever writing and great art work and you have a self changing diaper that blocks out all of the smell of baby bodily fluids! Little Trouble in Tall Tree had me from the first sentence and left me drooling like some of the characters. This book is worth its weight in white, read it and you'll understand what I mean.

Little Trouble in Tall Tree edition by Michael Fertik Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Baby noir. The very idea is totally hilarious, and the adorable absurdity of the premise gets an A+ for originality. Fertik's book has a fresh wit and charm that will keep you laughing from start to finish, especially if you are a creative daydreamer (like myself) who has often wondered, "What ARE those babies really gurgling about?" Some of the descriptions (I roared at the "baby Placido Domingo" scene... you will have to read the book to find out why) are not only ingenious but also unforgettable. I will now forever refer to any baby's over-the-top tantrum as "thermonuclear." This is a fast read and a great one to share with friends and family - particularly anyone you know who has a baby with an ear-splitting wail!
And that wasn't the author's intent. Babies truly are experts at getting what they want. Fertik's "baby noir" twist is meant to have some fun with that. I can see this as an eye-opening gift for new or expecting parents who might otherwise never suspect what's truly behind these distracting chubby cheeks.
If you want a book suitable for children but along similar lines, I suggest BOSS BABY by Marla Frazee.
Such a fantastic and funny book. The artwork was incredible. The plot line is so creative - you'll certainly be able to relate if you're a mom or dad, but even if you don't have kids it will make you reflect on your own childhood. Thoroughly enjoyed this read!
Cute book
Very cute story. Baby Gangsters !, how can you go wrong.
This was a very fun story, especially for the Dad of a three month old. The reactions of the babies and their day to day interactions were perfectly weaved into the 1930's style gangster story. Parents of all ages will find this an enjoyable read. I would recommend this as a nice bit of light reading on a trip or during a vacation.
What's actually going on in that kid's mind? What's he plotting? )
This is a great fun short story for adults (with some really excellent artwork) that anyone who has, knows, or is thinking of having kids will appreciate. Think Stewie from Family Guy meets Goodfellas.
And most importantly - it's actually a good story. A quick read (I read it in 30 mins on the elliptical machine...and tripped and fell off during the climax scene - ow) and it does all the things a good story is supposed to do - introduces fun characters, creates suspense, has a big reveal with a twist, and leaves plenty of room for more tales down the road.
